Nokia Washes Hands of Symbian and Releases its Source Code to the Masses [Blip]

Either this is the world's dullest April Fool's gag, or Nokia really has released the source code for Symbian. If it's the latter, that means developers can tinker with the builds, now that Nokia will no longer be developing the platform itself. [The Inq] More »

New Acer will be more like Apple, less like HP

The details behind the rift that saw Acer's CEO Gianfranco Lanci (pictured) suddenly resign yesterday are now starting to emerge. Simply put, Acer's board wants the Taiwanese company to be more like Apple and HTC, according to Bloomberg, raking in big profits on fat margins. Lanci's approach, however, was to aggressively increase volumes and using its scale to negotiate cheaper prices from suppliers in a race to steal market share from Dell and HP. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, Acer's profit margin in the last fiscal year was just 2.3 percent compared to Apple's 21.5 percent. Daunting, to say the least.

With Lanci gone, JT Wang, Acer's chairman and temporary CEO, plans to put more effort into expanding its smartphone and tablet business while broadening efforts around enterprise sales. For Wang, Lanci's departure marks a break with the past, saying, "Recently the iPad [tablet computer] and other new form factors have had a very big impact on the PC market. We have to change our business strategy." While PCs will still be core to the business, Wang said "we won't be in a hurry to change to become the world number one." Unfortunately for Acer, its brand is more closely associated with low-cost laptops than with the premium devices required to significantly expand its profit margins. We'd wish 'em luck but we think Acer will be better served by an innovative CEO and focused R&D.

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011
Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a 'self' post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments -- and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you've ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you'll know that it's a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you've never backed up your important files -- or if you only back up sporadically -- do it on World Backup Day!

It's not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there's always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don't forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools -- $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

HP enables Google Cloud Print on ePrint printers right out of the box

Man, remember when transferring data to your printer required a big fat cable and physical proximity to your ink spitter? Thankfully, we live in more refined times now and HP and Google have hooked up to deliver the first printers with driverless Cloud Print support, making the whole thing that extra bit easier. HP ePrint printers were already sophisticated enough to receive instructions via email and now they're casting aside the need for a connected PC to talk to Google's Cloud Print service as well. All you need is your machine's @hpeprint.com email address and then you're away, zipping pictures and text from your smartphone, tablet or laptop to the HP paper decorator. It's all seamless and wireless and probably feels like the future when you're doing it. We'd tell you, but we stopped printing stuff in 2004.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph
Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla's noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4's meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the 'Important' Windows Update rolled out. It's hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out -- did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 -- a great browser by almost every metric -- was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it's serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Boxcar Pushes Its Way Onto The Mac

My love of Boxcar should be pretty clear at this point. Because I'm an information junkie, it's probably the app I use the most on my iPhone/iPad besides Safari. And earlier this year, they brought the notification goodness to the web as well. Now they're taking the next step: native Mac support. Yes, Boxcar is here for the Mac. The app resides in your toolbar and when clicked shows a drop-down with all of your notifications as they come in in realtime. You can set it so a sound goes off with every new message and if you have Growl installed you can get a visual notification as well.

Kinect hacked to work with PlayStation 3, plays Killzone 3 badly

PS3 controlled using Kinect
Microsoft's Kinect, the fastest-selling gadget ever, has now been hacked to work with the PlayStation 3.

The Kinect isn't directly plugged into a PS3, though (that would be too awesome). Instead, it's plugged into a conventional PC laptop, where PrimeSense's first-party drivers are used to interface with Kinect. The data from Kinect is then converted into a format that the PS3 can understand, and output directly to the console using using diyps3controller, which lets the laptop USB controller interface with the PS3.

There's a video of the developer logging in and playing Killzone 3 on his PS3 using the Kinect after the break. Well, attempting to play Killzon 3, we should say. It seems like the hack has a little way to go before it's actually usable...

Video Curation Is Growing Up, ShortForm Hits One Million Visitors

With 35 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, the Google-owned video behemoth would be the second biggest search engine were it standalone site. I'd say these are fa web video has become a powerful medium. But, I think it's also fair to say that this powerful medium is in serious need of curation. What if you're just looking for a quick laugh, a short video, and don't want to wade through billions of videos -- what if you want to create your own, personally curated streaming video channel? Hmmm? Thankfully, content curation has come to video: ShortForm shows it's here to stay. The San Francisco-based startup allows users to create personalized channels of web video content, easily pulling clips from YouTube and other video sites. You can play videos back-to-back to create a stream of video, not unlike the TV viewing experience. Creating custom channels is simple, and I would say the UI is more user-friendly (or at least more attractive) than that of YouTube.

Asus Claims People Do Genuinely Want Windows 7 on Tablets [Tablets]

Despite Asus offering up a couple of Android tablets, they're still finding that customers want nothing more than Windows 7—because that's what they're used to. While Asus may privately agree that Android—or iOS—provides a better tablet experience than Windows 7, the fact of the matter is they're "making Windows 7 tablets because we still get a lot of enquiries from corporate and end users who are just used to Windows," says an Asus rep. HTC ThunderBolt Skin Case review

HTC ThunderBolt Skin Case

If you're looking for a simple, inexpensive case for your HTC ThunderBolt, the HTC Skin Case may be the way to go. It's a very basic rubber case and if you're used it on other phones, you'll be plenty familiar with it here.

It's a single piece of non-slip rubber that you fit the phone into. There are cutouts for the 3.5mm headphone jack, power button, camera, kickstand and microphone, so you don't lose any functionality there. It'll protect your phone from basic dings and scratches. And while there's no direct protection for the touchscreen, it will keep the screen from touching the surface when placed face-down.

Our only real ding on this case is its propensity for collecting dust and lint in a pocket, and that the case could be a little more snug. That said, it's easily removed, but doesn't feel like it could come off at any moment. And because it's rubber and you can remove it easily, you also can give it a light rinsing if need be.

We've got more pictures after the break. You can get the HTC ThunderBolt Skin Case is available in black, gray, blue or raspberry for $9.95 in the Android Central Store.

Today, eBay is launching its deepest integration with Milo?on it's search platform. Milo's local availability results will show eBay shoppers which local stores in their neighborhood currently have a desired item in-stock and how much it costs at each location. Milo currently provides access to millions of products from approximately 50,000 stores across all 50 states.

Why Salesforce Overpaid For Radian6

As you may have heard, yesterday Salesforce announced the $326 million purchase of social media monitoring company Radian6, the CRM company's largest acquisition to date. While we know that Salesforce has been actively pushing its social strategy with the debut of a Twitter and Facebook-like Chatter and the Service Cloud 3, $300-million plus is a lot of money for the CRM giant to shell out for a single company. In a press call with Salesforce executives and analysts yesterday, the company's CEO and founder Marc Benioff said that Radian6 currently has a revenue run rate of $35 million and is expected to add $40 to $50 million in revenue to Salesforce's top line this year. At $326 million, Salesforce paid nearly ten times Radian6's revenues, which is rare. So why did Salesforce want Radian6 so badly? First, Salesforce is aggressively pushing a social strategy and it's a dog eat dog world in the social enterprise space with a massive number of companies trying to capture marketshare for social applications. Salesforce is actively marketing Chatter but the Yammer and Jive competitor isn't a clear cut leader in the space. Radian6 boosts the company's footprint in social, and provides an established set of well-known clients, such as Dell, GE, Kodak and UPS.
