Why Hell Is Other Peoples' Remote Controls [Humor]

There's nothing that can better reduce you to a senseless ball of anxiety and clumsy flailing than trying to figure out someone else's home entertainment system. System! If you can even call it that. More »

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

Marvin Musquin's Hand Injury Update - Send Him a Get Well Message

From Marvin, Mathilde, and their website Marvin-Musquin.com...

The day started good in Wortham, Texas for the Freestone National Motocross. Marvin was awarded by his "Ricky Carmichael Hard Charger Award" from Hangtown MX during the riders meeting. Then, Marvin was sixth in first 250 MX Lites practice. In the second practice, Marvin was quickest. That put him up to fourth for the entry list in first race.

Marvin missed the holeshot by only a bit in the first race, Justin Barcia was leading in the first corner, Marvin was second. Then, Barcia crashed right in front of Marvin. Marvin couldn't avoid him. A big collision, including that Barcia's bike hit Marvin in the head. The worst result - Marvin's hand is injured.

Excercise your brain on the go with Quibble

A quick look at the Top Free iPhone app chart is enough to realise that there is little room for more… intellectual apps. Sure we get plenty of trivia and quizzes, but I still haven't seen any other app as infuriating and rewarding as this one yet.

Quibble [iTunes Link] by Chess Pie Media is a word game that tests your logical thinking and ability to connect concepts by matching four words, sentences or pictures. The idea is simple, but completing every puzzle can be more challenging than what you initially thought.

You are presented with four cubes with one clue on each side. You can turn the cubes as much as you like until you find a connection between the four clues facing up. The aim of the game is to match up four sides of the cubes with clues sharing a common theme. Once you find a solution for one face of the cubes, you will need to continue matching the rest of the clues until you have the solution of all six sides.

As you expected, this is easier said than done. A cube with the word "Franc" could immediately be matched with the word "French" in another cube, however, other clues like "Yen" and "Dollar" suggest that the common theme will be currencies, and not currencies and their respective countries. This is the level of complexity you'll have to face, which I found very challenging.

Quibble also offers hints to complete the puzzles, but they won't move any of the cubes for you. The hint will only tell you how many clues are correctly matched at a given point, but not which ones are the good ones. This is like completing a test-type exam and your teacher telling you there are some wrong answers without saying which ones need to be corrected.

All of this must be done within a generous time limit, however, your score will be determined by how fast you manage to solve every face. You are awarded with extra multiplier combos at the start of the game, but if you get stuck, you end up with a very low result. Unfortunately, Game Center and OpenFeint are not supported. It would be nice to compete against friends and be able to send challenges to each other. As it stands now, Quibble is more of a lonely gaming experience perfectly suited for playing while commuting and looking like a normal person.

The most obvious choice isn't always the good one

The game mixes different kind of puzzles including math calculations, rhymes and synonyms. The math module was pretty easy but I found it a good work out for the brain. Rhymes could be considered a training for crosswords, since you have to match words and their cryptic description. Synonyms was my favourite from the beginning, as I could match up words fast while expanding my vocabulary. The Quibbles type was a bit more random as the shared theme changes on pretty much every side of the cubes: suture, record, cactus and knitting are related with the theme needles and tonic, running, holy and mineral are types of water.

Overall I liked the execution in Quibble and found that hiding other available options put your memory skills in good use. It would be easy to criticise the game saying that some of the puzzles are too random because this is part of it's uniqueness. It definitely annoy you and frustrate you and I could have only hoped for a way to see the solutions before you decide to end the game.

While the developer has included a junior math pack for younger players, there is a specific version for kids available too. Maybe some of us should start with this one first...

Security firm RSA attacked using Excel-Flash one-two sucker punch

RSA attacked using Flash vulnerability
It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA's SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe's Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) -- a backdoor Trojan -- called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA's internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA's two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year -- and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: "The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in."

What we'd like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe's lackadaisical approach to patching Flash -- or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe's attention?

Supercross 2011: Kyle Regal discusses move to L & M Racing Yamaha

Moving up from the Lites class to the full time 17 rounds in the premier 450 Supercross class is a big step for any racer. Making it a double whammy, Kyle Regal is also going from Privateer Status to a full Factory Sam Manuel L & M Yamaha ride.

Kyle rode a few 450 Supercross rounds last season, when he wasn?t racing in the Supercross East Coast Lites, but it was this summer Kyle really gained momentum on the 450, finishing ninth in the series final standings.

Droid X Gingerbread update pushing out ... now!

Motorola Droid X Gingerbread update

You went to sleep last night, didn't you. (OK, so did we.) But wake up this morning, and that Droid X Gingerbread soak test has turned into a full-fledged dunking, with the update rolling out en masse. Lest you forget what you're getting: Coming down the pike is Android 2.3.3. Not the latest version of Gingerbread, but pretty close. You'll also have a new version of the Blur user interface, so things will look slightly different when you're done. It's a 111.8-megabyte download, so it might take a minute or two to snag.

To get the update, if you don't already see it, just go to Menu>Settings>About phone>System updates, and you'll be on your way.

The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Season Celebration

This year's AMA Motocross Banquet & Season Celebration was held in a magnificent banquet room at the Pala Resort & Casino. The room was decorated beautifully, lined with motocross dcor, as well as a stage decorated with the championship bikes and awards. The line-up of food, appetizers, desserts, and beverages was very elegant and delicious.

After dinner, the awards ceremony began. Jason Weigandt, along with Tim Cotter hosted the show. And of course Jason started it just like he does many of his shows - after slamming down an energy drink.

Jason went on to talk about each round of this summer's AMA Motocross Nationals, with a list of funny jokes pertaining to all the good and bad situations at each of the races. After that, the awards and trophies were handed out.

The night was filled with special memories, good times, and laughs. One poignant moment was when Kevin Windham accepted the award for 'Sportsperson of the Year'. Kevin always has a great way of expressing himself, but made a great comment towards his friend & the team manager, Mike LaRocco. He commented on Mike's motivation, that pushed Kevin to work hard and do his best ... it was touching, but at the same time very funny.

(Exclusive) YouTube?s New Strategy: Create a Network Of Networks

YouTube is now showing approximately 3 billion videos a day. A growing proportion of those are shown with ads?more than 2 billion a week?and YouTube as a business is expected to pass $1 billion in revenue next year. But when it comes to making money, some videos do better than others. For YouTube, it is all about scale, and networks of loosely aligned online video producers scale better than individual shows and viral-video phenoms. In fact, there is a brand new department inside YouTube called Networks. The purpose of the department is encourage the formation of these outside networks which then use YouTube as their distribution channel.

On iCloud, Baby

Apple did something really odd today. Something they almost never do. They pre-announcedthe agenda for the keynote of one of their events, WWDC, taking place next week. Yes, they probably did this in an attempt to set expectations ? read: no new iPhone coming ? but in doing so, they also managed to do something even stranger: they outed a completely unreleased product. iCloud. So what is iCloud? Apple only states that it's their "upcoming cloud services offering." Of course, a number of other details have been rumored for months now. I figured it was a good time to break down what we know ? or what we think we know about what's coming. Erick did a bit earlier. I'll do a bit more.

Somewhere around the world, floating amid a sea of crystal-clear water, is a Hatteras 100 Motor Yacht. It is hardly an ordinary boat.

Built for long passages, with a sturdy sea-keeping fiberglass hull, the Hatteras offers unparalleled engineering, meticulous craftsmanship and immense power. Its staterooms feature exquisite wood cabinetry, double bullnose moldings, and polished natural stone countertops. The main salon is equipped with plasma video screens and multi-channel surround sound for entertainment, while the pilot house features state-of-the art digital electronics for monitoring systems and navigation. And under the stern deck, there are twin 16-cylinder turbo diesel powerplants generating 2,400 horsepower each. It's enough propulsion to move the 270,000-pound yacht through the water at speeds approaching 30 mph.

On open water, the 100-foot Hatteras is the ultimate expression of luxury and sport unequalled in its ability to project wealth and prestige. However, thirty percent of the world is land - with many a mile of paved road. All of which begs the question: What does an uncompromising Hatteras owner motor about in when they come ashore?

They drive their new Bentley Continental GT, of course.

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!

Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

The social network Cloud Girlfriend
Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn't really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch 'soon,' and there's no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline 'The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,' Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it's all about fulfilling Maslow's hierarchy of needs. "CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow's higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."

Our concern, of course, is that it's very nearly April 1. We're also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we've grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage -- or overage -- or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you'd never know.

Let's not forget this is the Internet we're talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as... your dad, perhaps?

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011
Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a 'self' post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments -- and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you've ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you'll know that it's a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you've never backed up your important files -- or if you only back up sporadically -- do it on World Backup Day!

It's not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there's always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don't forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools -- $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

WMX Rider Insight: Vicki Golden's 2010 Season Review

When Vicki Golden turned pro in 2009, she went into the season open minded; she just wanted to see how she'd do in the Pros. It worked out pretty well for Vicki as she consistently finished in the top 4 in the first 5 rounds of the 2009 WMX season. After a season ending injury to Trey Canard, Geico Honda gave Vicki an opportunity to ride Trey's bike the remainder of the season of the Women's Motocross Series. It was a great experience as she finished 4th in Colorado, but her season ended prematurely as she injured herself in a practice session at Perris Raceway before the 6th round in Washougal.

In 2010 Vicki came back healthy and was picked up by Moto Concepts Yamaha. She wasn?t as consistent as she expected, but she did finish the season 4th overall points, with a 3rd place finish at the Pala Raceway National. In 2011 she will be running the #4 plate in the AMA Women's Motocross Series.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download
Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We'd like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon -- like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won't notice the icon or change in wording as they'll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you'll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware
Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware -- which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware's official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn't so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it's the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware's curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, "Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering." He adds that the move will allow VMware to "further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities" of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don't need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy's service without interruption.
